City God Temple

City God Temple is a cultural relic site under municipal-level protection. It was originally dedicated to Hua Guang, a famous chancellor and great general of Han Dynasty. During the reigns of emperor Kangxi and Qianlong in Qing dynasty, City God temple was expanded to Eastern Garden and West Garden(now Yuyuan Garden), occupying a ground space of 37 mu. At that time, merchants flocked around the temple to open stores and shops and a fair was gradually formed for fancy goods and local specialties.

In 1926, Grand Hall of City God Temple was remodeled into concrete structure with the funds donated by the local gentry. After found of the PRC, rectifications and regulations were introduced to improve the management of the temple. In 1966, the temple was closed down for business purposes. On January, 1995, the temple was reopened to the public.
